Author #SummerRead Exchange, His Midnight Sun, romance, Viviana MacKade

author-summer-reads-exchange_2

Today I’m thrilled to welcome Viviana MacKade to stop by for a visit and get to know her better. First, let me say I LOVE her cover. Don’t you? And I’m sorry to say she’s the last author in my SummerRead Author Exchange. I loved meeting y’all and hearing about your books. I hope we can do this again soon. My TBR list is full again. I’d better get busy reading!

Viviana has selected some of my quirky questions to answer. Let’s see what she has to say, shall we?

Describe your rituals for preparing to write.

I see my boys out for work and school, make an herbal tea, sit down at my desk, Pino, and I start: emails first, blog entries, re-reading yesterday’s writing to get into the mood, and off I go.

Are you a plotter, a pantser or some combination of both?

A bit of both. I like to know where the external elements of a story go (where the character have to go, if something like a hurricane happens, at which point the character will do something important like changing job or stuff like that), then I let the characters lead me through that. Let’s say I know A – B – and C will happen. I don’t know how my people will react to it, which sometimes (I’m looking at you, Aidan) changes the axes of the story and makes me g nuts.

Where do you go for inspiration?

Nowhere. I do my things, and stay very open to that sudden sparkle that makes me go, “oh, now that’s something to look into a bit more”. It can happen anywhere and at any moment, but I trained myself to listen to it and don’t let it go.

finale aidan (1).jpg

Tormented, fierce, and broken, sculptor Aidan Murphy has judged himself guilty. He yearns for love but pushes everyone away. He longs for acceptance but has lost the key to open his heart. Until he meets Summer Williams. Beautiful and smart, Dr. Williams promises haven for a man who believes he deserves none. All he has to do is let her in and risk his heart and soul.

Summer’s managed to keep her inner light alive, even through tragedy. She’s created a new life for herself and her daughter in Crescent Creek with loving, caring and fun friends–well, except brooding, breathtaking Aidan. She’s used to keeping away from his type, though. All she has to do is ignore the pull of a man who’s turning up to be much more than snarls and storms. Will her compassion and medical instincts let her?

Love can heal a broken soul and shake up a timid heart. Or it can unleash devastation and revenge.

Will Aidan and Summer survive the hurricane?

Maybe This Time, Susan B. James, Time And Forever, time travel

Come in. Sit down. Make yourself comfortable. Still summer in Texas, but maybe we can take our iced tea to the front porch swing and catch a cool breeze while we talk about one of my favorite subjects…Time Travel. Susan is also giving away two of ebooks, Time And Forever and Maybe This Time (love those titles, don’t you?) Post a comment with your email address and enter the drawing for a chance to read!

sue 1969 2013 cropped.jpeg

Susan writes second chance romances with a touch of magic as Susan B. James and children’s books as Susan J. Berger. She writes older heroines because she is chronologically gifted and enjoys creating characters who remember that change is only on the outside. Inside our older shells is a much younger psyche.

In her debut romance, Time and Forever, two women in their sixties inadvertently travel back to London in 1969. Maybe This Time is the companion book.

Susan’s other career is acting. In 2016, among other things, she killed Kathy Bates on American Horror Story- Roanoke. In 2017, among other things, she got stabbed by a pen on Future Man and played the victim on Major Crimes. Karma? Her 2018 began with a role on Lucifer. More to come.

TIME TRAVEL? Worst birthday present ever!

London stage star Jennifer Knight, is perfectly happy until a freak accident sends her tumbling back in time from London, 2001 to 1988, landing her at the feet of computer genius Lance Davies, the man who’d captured her heart and then stomped on it – her ex-husband.

Lance follows Jennifer back to the future, tangling time, and landing them both on the world’s missing-and-presumed dead list. Now the only hope of righting the universe is to change a past they have yet to experience. Maybe this time – just maybe – Lance and Jen will get it right.

Excerpt

Jen looked into the face of the man she’d adored since she was nine, and actively avoided for the last twenty years. Lance looked almost the same as the day they’d parted. A few more lines framed his hazel eyes, now sea-dark with concern. His brown hair showed no trace of gray. It was still too long, with the same stupid lock falling over his forehead. She automatically reached to brush it back. Stopped herself. Her throat was so dry. Where was a cough drop when you needed one? “You’ve aged well.” Jen’s knees buckled.

Lance kicked out a chair and sat, pulling her into his lap. “It’s okay. Whatever it is, we can fix it.”

His warm, strong hands sent shock waves shivering through her body. She shook her head mutely.

Lance’s voice sharpened. “Is it Jeremy? Kathryn? Has something happened to them?”

“Uncle Lance!” Kathryn stopped in the living room archway, eyes child-solemn. “Why are you hugging Aunty Jen?”

Jen slipped out of Lance’s arms and landed on the floor. Could this get any worse?

“Aunty Jen says you are a stupid head with a big brain and no feelings.”

Jen rose with all the dignity she could muster. “You shouldn’t repeat things grownups say, Kitty-Kat. It’s not polite.” She reached for the packet Mrs. Flannery left behind, willing her hands not to tremble. “Here are the papers, you came for. Nice to see you. Goodbye.”

Lance glanced from Kathryn to Jen. “Where’s Jeremy? I know he and Kitty-Kat went to Sussex. Why is she back without him, and what are you doing here?”

“We couldn’t get home, Uncle Lance. So we came here.” Kathryn scuffed her foot, now shod in a plastic Jelly shoe, against the wood floor. “I thought Jen would like the machine, but I don’t like being young again. My brain is too small. I want to go home.”

Lance’s hand tightened on the papers he held. “Kathryn,” he said carefully. “How old are you?”

“I’m nineteen and I want to go home.”

Lance catapulted out of the chair. “It worked. By all that’s good and beautiful, it worked. I didn’t think he could do it.”

“You knew? You knew what he was working on?”

Lance’s grin changed to the expressionless mask she used to hate so much. “Of course, I knew. I divorced you. Not your brother. I was helping him with the theory. He probably would have told you about it, had you been interested in anyone but yourself and your career.”

Jen resisted the urge to punch him. One of them reverting to childhood was enough. Too bad. Her boxing trainer said she had a fantastic right hook. She kept her tone smooth and even. “I don’t know when we are, but I turned forty-nine yesterday, Lancelot, and you don’t know half as much about me as you think you do. I am very interested in my niece, and she’s standing there listening to every word we say.”

Lance turned to Kathryn. “I’m sorry, sweetheart. Your aunty and I won’t fight anymore.” He crooked his little finger at Jen the way they used to do when they were children. “Pax?”

Resisting the temptation to break it, Jen hooked her little finger in his. “Pax,”

Kathryn curved her little finger around theirs. “Pax. Now can we get ice cream?”

Susan has consented to some of my quirky questions so we can get to know her better. Thanks!

How long have you been writing?

I started writing seriously in 1993. I began with children’s books. It wasn’t until 2009 that I thought about writing an adult romance.

Are you a plotter, a pantser or some combination of both?

I am a total pantser. My first romance, Time and Forever came about because I had written a post for my children’s book blog, Pen and Ink, about how to use NaNoWriMo. I had to sign up for that year’s Nano event to write the post properly. After I posted it I felt so guilty that I thought I had to try doing my own NaNoWriMo novel that year. I started with a question and eventually came up with a first draft. The funny thing about it is I have been told that the plot is so intricate and so perfectly worked out. I am pretty sure I pantsed my plot.

I’m a pantser too, but I’m learning to do some plotting. Makes it easier to wrap my poor little brain around the story.

Name an author or authors who never fail to inspire you.

I can’t name just one author. It depends on who I am reading at the time. My favorite authors are Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Sarah Addison Allen, Jayne Anne Krentz in all three of her identities, Robert Heinlein, Georgette Heyer, and Jude Devereux.

I love Sarah Addison Allen! A friend of mine loaned me her books and I’ve binge read all of them the past few months. Great stories!

Tell us about your current WIP.

Right now I am working on a novel that starts in Victorian England and jumps to 1940 wartime England. The heroine is a real person from history. Ada Augusta Lovelace – Lord Byron’s Daughter. Lord George Gordon Byron was a leading poet, politician and scandalous rake. His wife left him shortly after Ada was born. She saw that her daughter was given an excellent education in science and mathematics, hoping to avoid the strain of madness Lord Byron exhibited.

Ada grew up to be a brilliant mathematician. She invented the first computer language in way back in 1843 for a machine that was a mere an idea – Charles Babbage’s Analytical Machine.

Her story has fascinated me since I learned of her in my first computer history class. I wanted to time travel her to 1940 when Alan Turing, hero of the movie, The Imitation Game first made his machine to break German codes. I knew he had used Ada’s work.  I’m on the third draft.

If you met a genie, what 3 things would you wish for?

I am well versed in wish lore and I know asking for more wishes is out of the question.

A castle in Scotland with modern plumbing and an elevator? (My knees don’t do well on stairs.)

One of my books optioned as a movie. (I’ll leave which one up to the genie.)

A regular role in a popular TV series. (Prefer three funny lines and off per episode.)

What is the one thing you never seem to have enough time for?

Jigsaw puzzles. I love them and it’s difficult to find time to do them.

Great answers, Susan. And I enjoyed our visit. Please come back when you’ve finished your WIP. And good luck on Maybe This Time. It sounds delightful!!!

Author #SummerRead Exchange, Crime Times Two, July Howard, Wild Crime Series

author-summer-reads-exchange_2

julie howard

Today I’m happy to continue my Author SummerRead Exchange with Julie Howard. Join me for a glass of ice tea and we’ll get to know Julie better. (Love the background of your bio picture!)

Julie Howard is the author of the Wild Crime series. She is a former journalist and editor who has covered topics ranging from crime to cowboy poetry. She is a member of the Idaho Writers Guild and founder of the Boise chapter of Shut Up & Write. Learn more at juliemhoward.com.

Julie has agreed to do answer some of my quirky questions. These are the ones she picked.

  1. How often do you write?

Every day! I don’t feel quite right if I don’t pound out a few words. Sometimes, those words are a blog or implementing a marketing plan. Most of the time, though, I make sure I’m writing one of my stories – either a short story (I love writing flash fiction) or my latest novel. I love disappearing into my characters’ world and joining them on their journey. When I emerge, sometimes many hours later, I’m charged up for the rest of my day.

For me, blogging is a great way to get my creative juices flowing. I get to enjoy my stories all over again.

     2. Are you a plotter, a pantser or some combination of both?

Writing mysteries turned me into a plotter. I figured I needed to know who the culprit was before I started so I could lay the clues chapter by chapter. I’m big on writing outlines, but I always let myself wander off the path a bit along the way. In my first book, “Crime and Paradise,” I wandered so far off the path that I ended up changing who the murderer was! Most writers will tell you that you have to let your characters lead the story, not the other way around. So I’ll set my characters in motion, give them a setting, and then let them tell the story.

That makes sense. I start out being a pantser, but if I don’t do some plotting, it makes more work in the end. An outline works good for me, even if I only outline part of the story at a time.

     3.  Name an author or authors who never fail to inspire you.

I’m an equal opportunity reader, meaning I read everything from biographies to science fiction to historical fiction and everything in between. To me, good writing and good stories come in all packages. At the end of the day, though, I always come back to the classics. John Steinbeck, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, George Eliot, Henry James, Edith Wharton. I just finished rereading Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness about the Congo and it just about ripped my heart out. There’s a reason these authors stand the test of time.

 Absolutely!

     4. Describe one of your favorite characters and tell us who you patterned them after and why.

I really love the daughter of the main character in my Wild Crime series. Jamie is five years old, sassy and smart. She questions authority, stands up for herself, has endless energy and loves her younger brother to pieces. This is a girl who you just know will grow up to be a strong woman. I’m sure I’ll cry when I finish the final book and have to say goodbye to her. She’s really gotten under my skin.

How interesting it must be to watch her character develop throughout the series.

     5.  What is the best compliment you ever received as a writer?

“I’m looking forward to your next book.” When people say this to me, it gives me a rush of adrenaline.

     6.  What do you like to do when you aren’t writing?

When I’m not writing, I spend time with family, reading or, as often as I can, I head to the mountains. Give me pine trees, give me a crooked path, give me the sound of a nearby creek – and I’m in heaven. Fortunately, I live in Idaho where it’s easy to indulge myself.

Blurb from “Crime Times Two” (coming Fall 2018):

Meredith knows three things: First, the man in the library begged her to help him. Second, he was afraid of his wife. Third, now he’s dead.

While the evidence first points to a natural death, Meredith is certain there’s more to discover. People are tight-lipped in this small mountain village, and the man’s wife isn’t talking either. Then a second death occurs, with remarkable similarities. It’s time to talk about murder.

As a slow-burning relationship heats up in her own life, Meredith struggles with concepts of love and hate, belief and suspicion, and absolution and guilt. Nothing is clear cut…

She must decide: Is guilt, like evil, something you can choose to believe in?

Excerpt from “Crime Times Two”:

Jowls quivered under the man’s weak chin, and Meredith noted the stained and frayed shirt of someone who spent a lot of time alone in dark rooms, sending out a better version of himself into the virtual world. His eyes were anxious and beseeching at her as though she should have a clear understanding of him and his life.

Somehow, over the past hour and a half they’d been sitting next to each other – him playing video games and sharing his life story and her ignoring him the best she could – she had become his confessor and friend.

Meredith gave him what she hoped was an impartial-though-quasi-friendly smile. She reached for her purse and papers and rose from her chair. “Well. Nice talking with you.”

The man was lost in his own train of thought and seemed only slightly aware that Meredith was leaving.

He shook his head, morose.

“To make a long story short,” he summed up, “I think my wife is trying to kill me.”

Today’s another hot summer day in Texas and I’m ready for it. I’ve got all the ceiling fans going ninety to nothing, and a big pitcher of tea in the fridge. Sit down, kick off your shoes and join me for a visit with author Kris Bock. I’m a fan of Mary Stewart and Barbara Michaels, so I’m really eager to hear more!!

Kris, tell us a little about yourself.

Kris Bock cover banner png 851x315

Who is your ideal reader?

My romantic adventures should appeal to fans of “lighter” romantic suspense, along the lines of Mary Stewart, Barbara Michaels, and Nora Roberts. In fact, Roberta at Sensuous Reviews blog said, “Counterfeits is the kind of romantic suspense novel I have enjoyed since I first read Mary Stewart’s Moonspinners, and Kris Bock used all the things I love about this genre.”

You’ll find plenty of action and a sweet love story, but not the gritty violence and explicit erotica of some modern romantic suspense. I also tried to bring the New Mexico scenery to life – gorgeous sunsets, dangerous monsoon storms, and everywhere you turn a plant or animal that wants to scratch, bite, or sting you. Armchair adventure travelers are welcome!

Does your real life show up in your writing? In what ways?

My historical novels for children don’t use a lot of real life experience, since they are set in different cultures, hundreds or thousands of years ago. Of course, I assume that people haven’t changed that much – the seven deadly sins are pretty relevant today – so I draw on my understanding of people and my general experiences with emotions. For example, in The Well of Sacrifice, the main character idolizes her older brother and is envious of her prettier sister. She’s at an age where she thinks the adults should take care of things but is realizing that they don’t always do what’s right. I think those aspects resonate with kids today, even if you’re talking about a pre-Columbian Mayan setting with a very different culture and lifestyle.

Real life experiences often give me ideas for my adult novels, written as Kris Bock. What We Found is a mystery inspired by finding a dead body while hiking. Someone in law enforcement said that people often don’t report crimes they stumbled across. That got me thinking – Why? What reasons would you have for not calling the police? The book also includes falconry, based on experiences I’ve had hanging out with a falconer.

Whispers in the Dark follows a young archaeologist who stumbles into danger as mysteries unfold among ancient Southwest ruins. That was inspired by a trip to Hovenweep National Monument some years ago. I loved that setting and had to use it in a book!

I had an idea for a series about treasure hunting adventures in the Southwest, so I read up on some lost treasures. In The Mad Monk’s Treasure, two friends search for the Victorio Peak treasure – a heretic Spanish priest’s gold mine, made richer by the spoils of bandits and an Apache raider. Their experiences in the desert are based on my experiences hiking in New Mexico, though they get more danger and drama.

What writing projects are you currently working on?

I’m about to submit a mystery about a former war correspondent who returns to her childhood home after an injury and uncovers a mystery at the Alzheimer’s care unit where her mother resides. It’s intended to be the first in a series with the same main character.

Twitter-MadMonk

Excerpt from The Mad Monk’s Treasure

Erin wheeled the bike around the front of her house and mounted. At the corner, she paused and looked both ways. The long frontage road was dangerously narrow, with a cement wall on one side and a ditch on the other. Fortunately, traffic was normally light, and at this time of day the road lay empty. Erin pushed off, still grinning from her find. She rode on the right side, by the ditch, instead of facing traffic, because it was just too frightening to ride alongside the wall when a car passed.

She’d gone a block when she heard the hum of a car engine as it pulled out from a side street behind her. She rode along the very edge of the pavement, even though the car would have plenty of room to pass her without oncoming traffic.

Erin glanced over her shoulder. The black SUV 20 feet behind her hadn’t bothered to pull out into the road at all. Jerk. When would drivers learn to share the road with bicyclists? Erin pulled onto the two-foot wide gravel strip between the pavement and the ditch. She couldn’t stop without risking a skid, but she slowed so the SUV could pass.

The engine roared. Erin glanced back again.

Black metal bore down on her. Her heart lurched and the bike wobbled. This guy was crazy! She whipped her gaze forward, rose up in the seat, and pumped the pedals with all her power, skimming along inches from the ditch. He was just trying to scare her. She’d get his license plate and—

She felt the bumper hit her back tire. The bike seemed to leap into the air, and she went flying. The dried mud and weeds of the ditch seemed to rise up to meet her.

She didn’t even have time to scream.

Kris Bock desert

Kris Bock writes novels of suspense and romance with outdoor adventures and Southwestern landscapes. The Mad Monk’s Treasure follows the hunt for a long-lost treasure in the New Mexico desert. In The Dead Man’s Treasure, estranged relatives compete to reach a buried treasure by following a series of complex clues. In The Skeleton Canyon Treasure, sparks fly when reader favorites Camie and Tiger help a mysterious man track down his missing uncle. Whispers in the Dark features archaeology and intrigue among ancient Southwest ruins. What We Found is a mystery with strong romantic elements about a young woman who finds a murder victim in the woods. In Counterfeits, stolen Rembrandt paintings bring danger to a small New Mexico town.

Fans of Mary Stewart, Barbara Michaels, and Terry Odell will want to check out Kris Bock’s romantic adventures. “Counterfeits is the kind of romantic suspense novel I have enjoyed since I first read Mary Stewart’s Moonspinners.” 5 Stars – Roberta at Sensuous Reviews blog

Billowing Flames

The Alpha swung a leg over the motorcycle and tugged on his helmet. “You coming anytime this century, woman?”

Tatiana pulled her helmet down over her dark hair, the blunt ends sticking out from under it like twigs in a nest.

“Hold your horses, Romanoff.” She straddled her bike.

Demetri shifted the bike from its stand and rousted the thing with a kick of his booted heel. He gunned the throttle. “My horses want to go,” he called over the roar of the sports bike.

Tatiana started the motorcycle she borrowed from Marcus with a push of a button. The black beast growled to life. “Well, what are we waiting for then? I bet I can get to the counseling center before you.”

The howl of her engine made further conversation impossible when she revved the machine.

They tore off down the gravel drive, the bikes fishtailing. Bits of gravel spit out behind them. Demetri gunned his engine and took the lead. He flashed her a brilliant smile when he passed, making it almost worth being second place. But not quite.

As they rounded out of the gated fence onto the road, Tatiana cut under him to regain the lead.

He shook his head. Life will never be dull with you, tigress warrior. You are a fierce competitor, but then so am I.

I’m delighted to have you today, Brenda. Thanks for joining me during Hot SummerRead. Good luck with Alpha Pair. It sounds like my kind of escape!

Today I’m pleased to welcome a friend participating in the Author SummerRead Exchange with me. Join us for a tall glass of iced tea and talk about her book, Living The Dream.

Larynn Ford

Larynn is intrigued by the paranormal. She’s a day dreamer and a romantic. She loves to let her mind wander always searching for a happy ending to her dreams.

At home in East Central Alabama, she worked as a cook and cashier before becoming a wife and mother. Earned a degree in Elementary Education, taught school, and worked in customer service. All the while her day dreams stacked up in the archives of her mind.

She put some of those ideas on paper in 2009 and she’s going to keep on dreaming and searching for those happy endings.

Welcome, Larynn. And thanks for agreeing to answer some of my quirky questions just for fun.

  1. How long have you been writing?

I started writing in high school. It was a family-oriented love story that never made it past chapter one, but the notion of writing never left me. I thought about it often for years and after my girls were grown and I had more time on my hands, my desire for reading came back to life. I decided how much fun it would be to create worlds and build stories, so I opened my computer and gave it another shot. I had no idea if I’d make it past chapter one but here I am. Living the Dream is the third book in a trilogy detailing the lives of Lynzi Lancaster and Layne Brady and their journey to happiness.

     2. Are you a plotter, a pantser or some combination of both?

I’m a pantser and a messy plotter. I started my first book, In My Wildest Dreams, totally pantsing my way through telling my story. As ideas for future scenes popped into my head, I would drop to the bottom of my document and jot down my newest idea. I’d bounce back and forth from the story to the ideas section of the page deleting the notes at the bottom as I used them at the top. My form of plotting, if you can actually call it that, has continued through five novels, a novella, a short story, and my current work in progress.

     3. Where do you go for inspiration?

A dark quiet room with no distractions is certainly ideal for thinking and that is in fact where the concept for the Dream Trilogy was born but more often than not, inspiration comes to me. It can be song lyrics that spark a Q & A session with myself, answering all sorts of “what if “and “why” questions. It can also be a cross on the side of a highway marking the place where someone died as it was with A Place To Belong, my fifth novel due to be released in March of 2019.

     4. Tell us about your current WIP.

The book is a spin-off of my second novel, Rescued, which remains title-less at this point. I have never had a problem with titles before but for some reason, this one is still undecided. Rescued was written as a stand-alone book but at least one of the characters refused to remain between the covers of a closed book. Roxie was a mouthy teenager who turned her life around after she had a close call with death and had to be . . . wait for it . . . Rescued! Sorry, I couldn’t resist.

     5.  What is the best compliment you ever received as a writer?

A couple of comments made by readers directly to me almost had me in tears. One said the descriptions were so vivid she could see the scenes playing out in her mind. Wow! I mean that’s exactly what writers shoot for right? Making the story come to life for our readers. She really made my day. Another comment was simply, “I can’t wait.” Comments like these make the long hours worthwhile.

     6.  What is something we’ll never catch you doing?

Hmm . . . There’s probably a long list of things you’d never catch me doing but the top of the list has to be, getting a tattoo. I understand they are a form of art and some are quite beautiful but it’s just not for me.

Now let’s hear all about Living the Dream.

Living The Dream

Lynzi Lancaster Brady is, at long last, living her happily-ever-after with the man of her dreams. Their honeymoon bliss is interrupted when an innocent family visit drops her in the middle of the deadly situation they’ve been dodging for so long.

The troublemaking relative with a vendetta against the family forces them into a final showdown with a disastrous ending that threatens to take the elder of their family from them forever. Will an ancient sorcerer to able to bring her back from death’s door?

Book Excerpt:

Allvis grunted his disgust bringing an abrupt end to my vain attempts to gain my freedom when he pressed the blade in his other hand to my neck with a firm pressure. I sucked in a sharp quick breath and held it. One wrong move on my part was certain to send the sharp edge slicing deep into my throat. I’d be a goner for sure.

I gritted my teeth tighter. Hands clamped around his wrist, I dug my nails in deep, ripping at his skin to ease the blade away, and relieve the pressure. He put an abrupt end to my efforts by looping my hair around his fist again and jerking me at least another inch higher. The movement caused the blade to nick my skin. I dangled like a puppet from a string in his grip.

“Lynzi!” I read my name on Layne’s lips, horror and desperation carved into his face as he screamed for me, pounded the air, and begged Aunt Pet to work faster.

Allvis howled again. “Hey, boy! Where do you want me to leave her head when I separate it from her weak little human body?”

adventure, My Heart Still Surrenders, Robbi Perna, romance, sexy Italians

I’m delighted to have good friend and fellow author, Robbi Perna, back for another visit. For those of you who don’t know, she writes these wonderful books filled with just the right mix of Romance and adventure, not to mention a sexy Italian!! Robbi at the Victoriana Ball1 - Copy

Multi-published, awarding winning professional author, Robbi Perna, born and raised in Denver, Colorado, is the oldest of four children in an Italian-American family. As the only girl, she gained a unique insight on the Italian male psyche over the years. Her stories often reflect her Italian heritage and the traits many Italian men and women exhibit. At a recent reunion, a classmate approached Robbi and remarked, “I remember two things about you. You always wanted horses and you were always writing stories.” Robbi happily confirmed she had owned Arabian horses for a number of years before moving away from Denver and she still wrote stories. She now makes her home in Northern Virginia where she spends her time embellishing her townhome to resemble an Italian palazzo and crafting her stories.

Robbi brings a diverse perspective to her writing. Her degrees in Art History and a professional background in business, strategic planning and communications, and more than twenty years as a Senior Military Analyst provide a wealth of inspiration. She is the author of thirty-one published credits that include novels, short stories, articles, essays, and editorials.

Robbi’s genre fiction encompasses romance, the paranormal, history, adventure, and women’s literature. Her goal is to live up to one reviewer’s comments: “When you find a writer who can tell a wonderful story that captures your heart and can tell it superbly, well you simply have a great find. Robbi Perna’s stories fit the bill to a T!”

Robbi graciously agreed to provide us some interesting and fun things you usually don’t find out in a blog interview.

* An interesting fact you might not know:

The unification of Italy in 1871 made a country, but it did not make Italians. The general standard of living demonstrated little or no improvement with unification. Liberalism became associated with the rich while the common people remained outside the mainstream of Italian life. A successful completion of the unification process required their integration into the system—a lesson that remained unlearned for most of the nineteenth century and the early part of the twentieth. It was not until Mussolini’s fascist regime that the inhabitants of the peninsula began to think of themselves as a unified people.

* One of Robbi’s favorite characters, who she patterned him after, and why

The hero, a soldier of fortune known only as Navarre is my favorite character. He is the illegitimate son of a Spanish noble and a Basque woman. I patterned him after the strong, silent prototypical heroes of Hollywood’s golden era—mysterious, competent in whatever he does, kind, but at the same time—someone who could be very dangerous in a given situation.

Why—seriously? What red-blooded woman wouldn’t find him attractive and want him to protect her?

(Ummm, yeah. Navarre is my kind of man!”)

* Robbi’s least favorite character and what makes him less appealing.

Carolina’s father, Aurelio the Conte DeSimone, is my least favorite character. While historians of the period would describe him as a man of his times, he is cruel, self-serving, controlling, and believes women are chattel. Since I do not believe there is any excuse for cruelty or controlling personalities, for me, he is the least appealing sort of man in any age. However, from the standpoint of the storyline, I wanted the contrast between the hero, the illegitimate son of a Spanish noble, who is the true gentleman and Aurelio, born a gentleman, who is a bastard.

(You are so right. The weakness of one character does help us see the strength of another.)

* One of Robbi’s characters  in a completely unacceptable situation. She describes what his reaction would be.

Navarre is an intelligence officer, a soldier of fortune, the illegitimate son of a Spanish noble—not a palace courtier. He has neither the polished manners nor the birth rank. When Prince Umberto tells him he wishes to have him serve as the fencing instructor to Princess Margherita and her lady-in-waiting, the Contessina Carolina DeSimone, Navarre is horrified. He respectfully objects, but the Prince is adamant…and Navarre, mysterious, competent, and dangerous becomes a fencing master serving at the command and pleasure of the princess royal and the lady he once watched from the distance of a cypress grove in Tivoli.

(An unacceptable situation, yet our hero rises to the occasion….sigh!!!)

Now that Robbi has us all drooling over tall, dark and handsome Navarre, let’s sit back and enjoy an excerpt from her book.

“Cara mia, be sensible. You know we have no choice.” Carlo’s agonized voice broke the stillness of the cemetery. His tall, strong build, black hair, and dark eyes typified the Roman aristocrat. The red regimental dress uniform of the Pope’s Guardia Nobile intensified his good looks.

“Why does life have to be so hard? If my mother were still alive, she would never have allowed this to happen. She always liked you and we would have had her support. I would have had the hope of a better life, a life of my own choosing.” Her voice trembled with emotion and she clung to Carlo’s hand.

He looked down at her, his face full of the love she’d found there for all the years she’d known him. “Hope, what a laugh. There hasn’t been any hope for us since the day your father sided with the House of Savoy. No, Carolina, we have no hope and this is the last time I will risk meeting you. Go now, it is dangerous for us both, and you need to return home before the day gets much later.” He gave her hand a brief squeeze before he removed it from his arm and turned to escort her over to where the coach waited. Her companion, Maria, and Giuseppe, the coachman who had served her mother stood waiting by the door.

“Come, Ma’donna. We must return to Rome before the Count sends someone to look for you.” Giuseppe let down the steps and helped the two women into the coach. Carolina watched him give Carlo a long look before he climbed up to the box.

Carlo leaned his head into the carriage window. “Farewell amore mio. I’ll pray to our Heavenly Father for your safety. I leave tomorrow for my next assignment with the Guardia Nobile. I also have no choice. My family remains faithful to the Holy Father. Only those few misguided fools like your father fail to realize Victor Emmanuelle is an opportunist who

offers nothing except empty promises. The rest of us still believe the future security of Italy lies with Pio Nono. You’ll see—he will triumph in the end.” Carlo stepped back and spun away in the opposite direction to mount his horse.

“Ma’donna Carolina, don’t cry so. You will make yourself ill. Come, let Maria hold you.” The woman, a distant cousin of her late mother’s, had been her companion since childhood. She enfolded Carolina in her arms and held her against her amble, dark clothed bosom.

“Maria, I’ll never see him again. We’ve been planning to marry since we were children. How will I live without him?” She sat up straight and attempted to dry her tears. “What will I do so far away in Turin? Why must I serve a cause I don’t understand?”

“You must be patient. Perhaps your father will come to his senses.” The older woman stroked a hand down her back to comfort her, but Carolina saw Maria stare out the carriage window with a bleak, distant expression.

***

Across the expanse of uneven ground, the man known only as Navarre standing in the shelter of the cypress trees lowered his binoculars. He tilted them so the sun would not reflect off the lenses and disclosure his presence. He retraced his steps to the horse he’d tethered in the shelter of the stone ruins at the edge of the cemetery.

“Come Compeador. The young lovers, whoever they are, will no doubt find their way through whatever troubles them, but their presence has delayed our journey long enough. I must deliver the King’s message to my contact in the Vatican before midnight.”

The Arabian stallion snorted and sidled when the man slid a black booted foot into the stirrup and mounted. Once settled deep in the saddle, he reined the horse’s head in the direction of the road toward Rome and set off at a canter taking care not to overtake the coach traveling along the Via Salaria. Once cleared of the town, the pair cut across the countryside and covered the distance at a pace designed to eat up the remaining kilometers. The need to break his journey to avoid detection had put him behind schedule.

After Lunch, Les Voutes, Vers-Pont-du-Gard, France

As promised we’re continuing Stan Hampton’s journey today. It’s been fascinating so far, and I admire him for it. At this stage of my life I don’t know if I’d ever have the courage. So I’m going to live vicariously through Stan’s adventures. Join me!

The morning of 27 February I traveled by train to Marseilles where I changed trains for Aubagne. After that I had to take a bus to the village of Vers-Pont-du-Gard, a mere 4 kilometers from the famous Roman aqueduct, the Pont-du-Gard. Actually, I attempted to call a taxi, but that did not work. It took the help of a good friend in Montpellier who called for a taxi that took me to the “a Gauche du Pont,” a friendly bed and breakfast that was a momentary home. And a very nice home it was—my room was 200 years old and had a stone ceiling.

a gauche du Pont Bed & Breakfast, Vers-Pont-du-Gard, France

After a Continental Breakfast the morning of 28 February, Fabian, one of the owners of the “a Gauche du Pont” showed me the way along 4 kilometers of winding trails through the forest to the Pont-du-Gard. Though I walk over a mile every day at the Université and so am in better shape than in January, carrying a backpack filled with camera equipment was a bit tiring. But soon, I caught my first glimpse of the famous 2,000 year old Roman aqueduct that I had read about for so many years.

Pont-du-Gard, France

The Pont-du-Gard from the banks of the Gardon River. I did it! I was actually looking at, and had touched, the 2,000 year old architectural monument built by a people long gone.

Pont-du-Gard, France

Fabian and Veronique, the owners of “a Gauche du Pont”, and I had dinner in the nearby Medieval village of Castillon-du-Gard, then we went for a brief walk because I wanted to get some photos at night. It was a very brief walk because it was cold and windy.

Castillon-du-Gard, France

After a Continental Breakfast the morning of 1 March I caught the bus from Vers-Pont-du-Gard to Avignon. Faced with a 4-hour layover for the train to Arles, I opted for a bus—within an hour of my arrival I was on my way and arrived in Arles just about an hour later. Within an hour I set out to register for a tour into the famous Camargue the next day, plus spent the afternoon visiting the Roman amphitheatre and arena.

And yes, I did it. I was standing where, perhaps 2,000 years ago, actors, musicians, and singers performed for a packed audience who spoke Latin and ruled an Empire that encircled the Mediterranean Sea.

Wow. These pictures are fantastic. Readers, can you imagine actually standing there and snapping the photo? Not seeing it on a movie or television screen. Not reading about it. Actually being there. We have more of Stan’s journey to come. Come back next Tuesday for more.

MuseItUp, One Man's Journey of the Spirit, Stan Hampton author

After Lunch, Les Voutes, Vers-Pont-du-Gard, FranceFriend and fellow writer Stan Hampton has agreed to share photos of his travels with us. This post is just the first of several. Over the next few weeks, I’ll be sharing more.

Stan is a wonderful photographer as well as writer, and I’m sure you’ll enjoy his journey as much as I did. Welcome, Stan. I’ll turn it over to you.

Imagine for a moment that you have spent years, if not decades, dreaming and wishing to travel and explore. Not as a typical tourist wanting to visit the big foreign cities and famous sites—though there is nothing wrong with either goal. But traveling and exploring for a specific purpose. And imagine that after decades, the dreams and wishes actually come true.

I am retired and am a full-time university student working on my Bachelors degree with the ultimate goal of attaining a doctorate. My long-held dreams and wishes began to happen after I applied to the Universities Study Abroad Consortium (USAC), Reno, Nevada. USAC was founded in the late 1980s and is one of several academic organizations that assist American students in studying overseas. I wanted to study in Ireland, but after talking with a senior director, I decided to apply for France instead.

In January 2017 I set out from Las Vegas, Nevada to Pau, France, where I would spend the Spring Semester studying French at the Université de Pau et des Pays de L’Adour. (Ah, Pau is pronounced “Po.”)

Imagine, a person my age (senior citizen, I think) being a full-time university student studying in a foreign country. And this is where, in a very real sense, my journey of the spirit begins. And the journey is not yet complete—there are a couple more sponsored outings before the semester ends in late April, after which I am signed up for an optional tour of the Normandy region. Then, on my own I go to northern England before boarding the Queen Mary 2 in Southampton to cross the Atlantic back to the States. At least, that’s the plan.

Day One Las Vegas

3 January, the journey begins when I fly out of Las Vegas, bound for Paris via Philadelphia, where I will catch a flight to Pau, a small town in the shadow of the Pyrenees Mountains in southwestern France.

Day Five, Pau, The Castle Wall

During the first week there were a pair of walking tours of Pau for the American students. This is my view of the Chateau de Pau, birthplace of King Henry IV. Did I mention I am a photographer? I always try to look for a different and interesting angle when photographing. Sometimes I succeed, sometimes…

Toulouse Rail Station, France

The Winter Break began on 25 February. That morning I traveled by train from Pau and changed trains at the rail station in Toulouse, and again at Marseilles, bound for Aubagne, France.

Foreign Legion Museum, Aubagne, France

The Foreign Legion Museum in Aubagne, 26 February. All of my life I have been fascinated by the French Foreign Legion, particularly their role in the French-Indochina War (1946-1954) and the French Algerian War (1954-1962). Indochina, especially the Battle of Dien Bien Phu (November 1953-May 1954), always reminded me of a Greek tragedy—no matter how much courage the ordinary Legionnaire and French Union soldiers displayed, a tragic end awaited all. And so, units like the 1st Foreign Parachute Battalion, 2nd Foreign Parachute Battalion, battalions of the 13th Foreign Demi-Brigade, and battalions of the 2nd and 3rd Foreign Infantry Regiments, with other French metropolitan, colonial and African units, fought until destroyed; the survivors were marched away into captivity.

Foreign Legion Museum, Aubagne, France

Stan has sent me so many wonderful photos that I’ve decided to post them once a week for the next few weeks instead of all at once. Come back to see more of One Man’s Journey of the Spirit in a week!
